MMO Radio: Episode 09 – “Wildstar 2013: Lovely, Lovely Pigeons”

MMORadioSmall

Adam is out this week gettin’ hitched, so Gavin Townsley and I hold down the fort! Thankfully, it was a big news week with Wildstar being confirmed for 2013! We break down why this game is worth paying attention to, even for someone like me who tries not to attend! What? I don’t like spoiling things for myself!

But hey, when you have a full-on paths to endgame based on exploring, lore finding, being social, and yes, killing, that’s worth noting. Plus, 40 man raiding, dynamically spawning quest hubs and dungeons, action combat, player housing, PvP, and content layered enough where a mining node could turn out to be a spot on the back of a giant raid boss… well, you can see where we’d be piqued.

A little later we talk about Mortal Kombat, TERA’s excellent combat and odd boob physics, and anime roleplay! I bet you thought you’d get out of tabletop this episode, didn’t you? Well, let that one drop of sweat stand out from your head now, because we go there!

A reminder: Our 5-star iTunes review contest is still going! Leave a written review for your chance to win a copy of Strike Suit Zero courtesy of Hooked Gamers!

MMO Radio Episode Two – A War Z Blunder

MMORadioSmallWe’re back again with Episode #2 of MMO Radio: A War Z Blunder. This week we talk about one of the year’s biggest controversies in The War Z. Is it a shameless cash grab? A copycat of Day Z? Absolutely, but it’s also pretty funny if a little frustrating. Plus, if it’s big enough news to pull our friend Adam away from his Dungeons and Dragons planning, you know it has to be good.

Speaking of Dungeons and Dragons, Adam regales us with the latest adventures of his campaign. I won’t spoil anything but lizard necromancers might be involved.

Remember, if you like what we’re doing to please give us a 5-star iTunes review. There is never a more important time to review than during a show’s beginning, so we would truly appreciate it.

Join us tonight for the FINAL episode of the Rift Watchers podcast

[IMPORTANT: Taken from the Rift Watchers main page. Game By Night is unaffected and will probably see more activity with the extra free time.]

Hi Everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that tonight will be our final episode of the Rift Watchers podcast. Over the last eight months, we’ve joined together on a more-or-less weekly basis to talk about a game we all love. The project has been an almost daily part of my life, in one way or another, for nearly every day since we started. The community and the team at Trion has received us wonderfully and in a bigger and kinder way than any of us ever thought we’d see. It was exciting and a pleasure to say the least.

The big question, then, is “why?” The answer is pretty simple: Rift Watchers is a project that I wanted done with my full effort or not at all. Every episode took nearly eight hours from start to finish and required a significant amount of planning. As we all move forward with our lives, responsibilities change. Gavin, as you probably heard, got an internship with PC Gamer; he’s on the path toward the career he’s wanted for as long as I’ve known him (and it couldn’t be happening for a better guy, incidentally). Jeremy is regularly flown around the country doing a job that requires more dedication and time than many his age would be willing to commit; and that says a lot about who he is as a person and how much he’s willing to put forth for his burgeoning family. For my part, I’m embarking on my journey towards a Master’s degree and beginning a new job making sure aspiring teachers find placements in the best districts New York State has to offer.

We all still find time to play, read, and discuss RIFT regularly.

The reality is simply this: Rift Watchers is not something I ever wanted to be “fit in.” Over the last eight months, it’s become “my baby” in many ways, and like a protective parent, I want it do be done justice; I want the original vision and standard to be maintained. I don’t know that that’s possible anymore, at least for now. And so we find ourselves here. Rather than ebb into the classic “podfade” we’re electing to pull the train into one final stop, bid our passengers farewell, and watch the steam fade off  by the sunset’s light.

Podcasting has been a longtime hobby of mine, and all of us, and I’m sure – sure – it’s something we’ll come back to. We’ll let you know when the train starts rolling again, bound for Telara or elsewhere, and make sure you have a ticket to ride.

Until then, we’d love if you’d join us for one last show tonight via our Livestream. We’ll be going live at 10:30PM EST on our channel page. Tweet it, share it, and do what you will; we want as many people there as can make it. Stay tuned to our Twitter for to-the-minute updates during pre-show.

Thank you for everything, guys, and a big thank you to our friends at Trion for supporting us throughout it all. Remember to add the site to your RSS readers. We’re staying live here for the foreseeable future, posting as we will, and sharing our adventures in the first MMO of the next-generation.

Cheers,

Chris

The Multiverse – Season 02 Episode 08 – “Milk Them Mode”

Hey Gang,

It’s been an interesting set of weeks and we thank you for sticking with us and awaiting this episode! Adam and I have our travel behind us, so we came together Saturday to talk about the utter WEALTH of MMO news that’s cropped up this last month. On the docket today:

  • RIFT’s state of the game address and looking into the future – too much open world PvP?
  • Fan Faire – What doth thou learn, ser Adam?
  • A brief trip down monocle lane…
  • Darkfall 2.0… a NEW game?!?
  • And much, much more!

This episode was very fun to record and Adam did a great job of putting it together. As always, if you like it, please consider dropping us an iTunes review!

The Multiverse – Season 02 Episode 05 – “Who Needs Corrupted Coins When There’s Sony?”

Hey Gang,

Season 02, Episode 05. Yeah. Awesome stuff. Sometimes I wonder how we made it this far. Then I remember the great guy I do this thing with — thanks Adam! — who won’t let me slack! We’re definitely finding our groove this season, so I hope it shows through for you.

This week we spend a good amount of time talking about the issues with Sony, RIFT’s Patch 1.2 and if it’s showing a decline, indie and triple-A, and where the future of MMOs really lies.

If you enjoy the show, remember to leave us an iTunes review. Adam is extending his offer another week: If we pass 24 total iTunes reviews, we’ll give away a free month of playtime to your favorite MMO. If we pass 38 reviews, we’ll hook up three of you with free months. Cool stuff, eh?

Without further adieu, enjoy the show!

The Multiverse – Season 02 Episode 04 – “Angels with Chainsaws”

Welcome back to another edition of The Multiverse! We start this episode off with a little Warhammer Online, move into angels with chainsaws and LotRO’s fourth anniversary, and Chris gets some guild advice from the man who wrote the book. This was kind of a crazy show. Especially when we answer Massively’s question.

We’re also posing you a challenge to leave us an iTunes review – and if we hit our goal of another 10 5-star reviews, Adam’s going to buy you a month of game time for your favorite game! It gets better, if we can get to 38 or more Adam will buy three of you full months. So drop in and leave us a review!

Enjoy the show!

The Multiverse – Episode #33: “Rift VIP Beta Key Giveaway!”

Hi Guys,

This is a special episode of The Multiverse in a few ways. First and foremost, as of this show, we are officially unveiling the new Vagary sub-site, Rift Watchers. As you can tell by the name, we’ll be watching all the developments with Rift and bringing them to you in fansite-blog format. Our goal is to bring you the most important news breakdowns, guides, and blogs that we can up to and following the release of the game. This will be a blog as you’ve always known it, with a one-game emphasis and extra material to support fans of the game. That being said, we won’t be holding back any punches. If something needs to be said, we’ll say it. This is a project we’re taking on because we like what we’ve seen and want to contribute to the community. Blind support is not something we’re interested in.

To herald in the new site, my two partners-in-crime, Jeremy and Gavin of the MMO Voices podcast (and Gavin now of PC Gamer!!!), join me to break down why it is we’re so excited for the game. I think it’s pretty telling that up until a few weeks ago, Rift was pretty well under the radar for all three of us. Since then, we’ve all dug in, read up, and gotten ourselves excited. Given all of the big happenings in the last few weeks, you can take from that what you will ;-)

The second reason for this special edition is foretold in the name. To kick off our new site, we have 5 VIP beta keys to give away. These keys will guarantee you a spot in every Rift beta event before release. We’re going to be giving these out Thursday, so you’ll have plenty of time to apply the code, get an invite, and download the client. To enter, all you need to do is leave a comment on the giveaway page at Rift Watchers. That’s all. One lucky winner will also receive a free month to the sci-fi MMO Perpetuum. If you’d prefer one key over another, please say so in the comment and we’ll hook you up.

We’d like to give a big thank you to Vagary for hosting the site and Tina at Trion Worlds for making this giveaway possible.

Topics:

  • News – FFXIV restructures management, extends free period until it meets their expectations; what does this mean for the game?
  • Main Discussion – RIFT!
    • Story, Setting, and Lore – Who are the Guardians and Defiant, and what makes their situation so compelling?
    • The Open Class System Explained – Can you really be anything you want, how does it compare to other MMOs?
    • Dynamic Content: Rifts, Layers, and Content, oh my!
    • Gameplay: Beyond Kill Ten Rats
    • Endgame: Raiding: good, bad, or otherwise?
    • PvP: Let’s just say, “thank god there are no arenas”
    • And more!

Enjoy the show, folks. If you’re interested in Rift at all, we’d certainly appreciate you adding our humble project to your feed readers and blogrolls. We’ll do our best to keep you entertained and coming back for more. Until next week!

The Multiverse – Episode #17: “Ferrel Offends EVERYbody”

Happy Tuesday Folks,

Another week, another Multiverse. Riknas was under the weather this week, so it was just Ferrel and I, with Ferrel at the helm. I’ve gotta say, I kind of like being a co-host. And a harvest queen– you’ll just have to listen to get that one.

Ferrel was in rare form, too. I’m pretty sure there’s a thin slice of people he didn’t offend, but it’s hard to say. You can direct your hate mail to multiversepodcast@gmail.com and let him know how you feel. Just remember, he looks a bit like Arnold Schwarzenegger, so choose your words wisely my friends.

Without further delay, here are this weeks amended notes.

The Multiverse – Episode #16: “I am Betty White”

Happy Monday Everyone!

To start the week off right, we’re here to bring you the one-week-delayed Episode 16 of the Multiverse. Things didn’t go off a smoothly as planned but the results are a funnier show. Go figure.

This week, our main topic is what it takes for an MMO to get, and keep, our attention. Plus, any kill clauses that might come up along the way. We were joined in the tail end by Gavin of Flex Your Geek, to talk a little bit about WoW’s AVR addon.

Be sure to stay tuned after the show ends as Riknas and I share our most embarrassing childhood moments.

Show Notes – 4/30/10 – “I am Betty White”

Introduction

  • Introducing the golden girls podcast, hosted by Betty White, Bea Arthur, and Estelle Getty.
  • What’s new this week?
  • What have we been playing?

Round Table

  • News:
    • Alganon has launched! Again!
      • Has the free to play model but looks pretty meh. Two races and “several” classes?
      • “Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars – combat, exploration and character progression,” Derek Smart continued. “In Alganon, in addition to these we’ve added the fourth pillar to the equation; a story.”
    • Guild Wars 2 released their manifesto.
      • This time around, there’s no question that it’s an MMORPG”
      • In GW you experience the story of the world, but the story in GW2 is the personal story of your character as well. … Then the choices you make will take the story in different directions. Each time you play through the game, you can experience a different storyline.” Moral Dilemmas that impact the story. Will this block out content based on the choice, good or bad?
      • With GW2 there’s a third option too: you can just naturally play with all the people around you. … your interests are always aligned with all other nearby players anyway.”
      • Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward. Our games are designed to be fun from moment to moment.”
    • Age of Conan lets you level… offline?!?!
      • Tuesday: Active accounts get four levels they can use to bump up any 30+ character. They get an extra level to use every four days. Never stops. Level cap of 80. If you stopped leveling at 30, you could max out in 200 days, never having killed anything.
  • Main Topic: What does it take for an MMO to get your attention and earn a pre-order/purchase – what marketing works, what pushes you over, and what’s too much.
    • Any kill clauses?
  • Extra topic: AVR addon.
